Quartz countertops offer an alternative to ever popular granite and marble as stone in kitchen design. One of the unique advantages is that quartz is one of nature’s hardest minerals. The hardness of the stone can go a long way into durability for countertops and prevention of chipping or cracking of the stone. Quartz countertops are aesthetically pleasing in the same way as other stones helping beautify the look of your kitchen.
Quartz countertops are made of natural quartz combined with epoxy resin, a thermal setting resin used primarily in making strong adhesives and laminates. These components create a strong, durable, and hygienic countertop that has become extremely popular amongst homeowners for its ease of care and maintenance. Because it is not made of 100 percent stone, it is typically referred to as engineered quartz.
Quartz countertops are scratch- and scorch-resistant. There are only three other minerals on earth that are harder to scratch or burn than quartz. Although excessive force with a sharp edge, or prolonged exposure to heat, may cause slight damage, the occasional kitchen mishap will not leave a mark on quartz.
Some quarts countertops are constructed of quarried slabs of natural stone, but today an engineered quartz product is manufactured by mixing about 95 percent ground quartz with 5 percent polymer resins. This process brings about a very hard countertop with a natural stone look that is not only low maintenance but available in a number of color choices to go with any décor.
