Your kitchen countertops are an important element of you kitchen. You prepare food on and eat meals off of its surface. If you’re doing a kitchen remodel or putting in countertops in a new home kitchen, you should consider using eco-friendly materials for your kitchen counters. In the past eco-friendly materials have been best used for flooring surfaces, but with technology and an increase in knowledge concerning green materials, you can now safely use green materials for kitchen counters.
There was a time when little thought was given to kitchen countertops.
A good, thick slab of wood was all that was needed when built-in cabinets gained popularity in the 19th century. Then tile took over the kitchen because it was easier to keep clean and has been a mainstay for more than 100 years.
The 1950s saw the introduction of plastic composites, such as Formica, which boomed in the 1960s and ’70s. The late 1980s and early ’90s saw the rapid growth of granite as the surface of choice and one that continued into the 21st century.
In between, other materials such as soapstone, marble, slate and stainless steel have appeared, disappeared and reappeared. Recently, science has been used to try to create the perfect countertop material. That’s led to an increase in man-made solid surface materials, composites of real stone and polymers and even concrete.
Of course, the vast array of choices for today’s homeowner means a lot more work goes into the decision-making process when selecting a countertop material for your kitchen. The options may seem dizzying but there is one constant – none of the materials is perfect.
