The kitchen is no longer a purely functional area, but is an integral part of the interior design scheme of the home. It’s really difficult to settle down with the perfect design of your kitchen. It takes a lot of energy and worse still a lot of time. Designing a modern kitchen means taking a new look at many materials and applying them in new and innovative ways.
Contemporary kitchen designs
The contemporary kitchen borrows high functionality and streamlined surfaces from the modernist design movement, but its style often incorporates traditional ideas as well for a sleek but livable feel.
“Clean and simple is the underlying philosophy for contemporary design,” says designer Cameron Austin of Beth Haley Design in Nashville, Tenn. “My approach differs from client to client, but I really love using simple white cabinetry with clean lines and then adding texture and warmth with things like interesting tiles or a dark hardwood floor.”
Romantic Design
Pink may be an unconventional choice for a kitchen, but it can be the perfect choice for a soft, romantic design. Designer could use a palette of pink, gold and white mixed with Old World and traditional touches to create a richly styled, feminine kitchen.
Arts and Crafts
The Arts and Crafts Movement is more than 100 years old, but its appeal has stood the test of time. Originally a protest of mass-produced items and stuffy, ornate Victorian design, its call to heed a simpler aesthetic and fine craftsmanship still resonates with homeowners today. Common items that reflect an Arts and Crafts heritage are handcrafted furniture, simple trims, ceramic tiles, earthenware, metalwork and stained glass.
