Travertine is a natural stone material from the limestone family. It is made of calcium carbonate and is usually found in the form of deposits near warm or hot springs. It was frequently used in ancient times as a building material. Because travertine is such a porous material, it should be sealed before use in construction or renovation projects. It is most commonly used for countertops and flooring, but may also be used in showers and tub surrounds as well as in exterior decor. The largest building in the world constructed largely of travertine is the coliseum in Rome, Italy.
As old an option it is for a sturdy and reliable building material, travertine tile remains to be a highly diverse natural stone, suitable for all kinds of applications. Nowadays travertine is used not only for structural works or cladding but, since they can be polished, are also marketed as ornamental slabs, although not premium and for routine use; Travertine generally has a very affordable price, even the colored ones, which cost just a bit more.
Travertine was used in the ancient world, but can also be found as a major component of many modern buildings such as the Getty Centre in Los Angeles, and the UCLA medical centre. Travertine is often used to resurface structures, in counter tops, flooring, and in cobble stones. It is also used in a number of unique stone home furnishings. It is not as hard as quartzite, or as smooth as marble, although it can take a honed finish. Today it is widely used both indoor and outdoor and is one of the most versatile components available on the market.
